Common Moving Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

After years of moving households and businesses, the same handful of mistakes come up again and again — and nearly all of them are avoidable with a bit of planning.

Booking too late is the most common one. Movers get booked up fast around the beginning and end of each month and during summer; waiting until two weeks before your date limits your options and often raises the price. Book as soon as you have a firm date.

Underestimating the volume of belongings is next. What fits in a home never looks like much until it's in boxes on a truck. Getting an accurate in-person or video estimate, rather than guessing over the phone, avoids a crew or truck that's the wrong size for the job.

Packing valuables and important documents with everything else is another recurring issue. Keep passports, medication, jewelry, and anything irreplaceable with you personally, not in the truck.

Finally, not confirming the pricing structure in advance leads to the most disputes. Ask directly: is this hourly or flat rate, is travel time included, and what happens if the move runs longer than expected? A clear answer before moving day prevents a frustrating one after.
